Math and writing are more alike than you'd think.

Polaris Academy started with one idea: kids who are great at math and kids who are great at writing are usually doing the exact same thing. They're building an idea step by step, and checking that each step makes sense.

That's why we teach math and writing side by side, using the same rule for both: explain it clearly, get it exactly right, and make sure it holds up when someone checks your work.

We don't do video lessons here. Every class is written out, because the best way to really learn something tricky is to read it at your own pace — and come back to the hard parts as many times as you need.

Fractions Without Fear

What a fraction really is

A fraction like 3/4 is just division that hasn't happened yet — it means "3 divided by 4." Once you see it that way, fractions stop feeling like a strange code.

Equivalent fractions

Multiplying the top and bottom by the same number doesn't change the value, because you're really multiplying by 1 (like 2/2 or 5/5). That's how 1/2 and 4/8 end up being the same amount.

1/2 × 4/4 = 4/8

Adding fractions with different bottoms

You can only add fractions straight across when they share a bottom number. If they don't, rewrite both with a matching bottom number first, then add the tops.

1/3 + 1/4 → 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12
Try it Add 2/5 and 1/3. Find a matching bottom number first, then add the tops.

Solving for x

Think of it as a seesaw

An equation is two things that balance, like a seesaw. Whatever you do to one side, you have to do to the other, or it tips over.

Getting x by itself

To solve for x, undo whatever's been done to it, starting with the last thing done — undo addition or subtraction first, then multiplication or division.

2x + 5 = 17
2x = 12
x = 6

Checking your work

Put your answer back into the original equation. If both sides match, you solved it right!

Paragraphs That Stick Together

Start with a topic sentence

A good paragraph opens with a sentence that tells the reader exactly what it's about. Everything else in the paragraph should support that one idea.

Evidence, then explain it

After your topic sentence, give an example, then explain in your own words why it matters. Evidence alone leaves the reader guessing.

A quick example

Topic sentence: "Reading stories helps people understand how others feel." Evidence: "Kids who read a lot of fiction do better on tests about reading emotions." Explanation: "That's probably because following characters through tough choices trains the same skill as understanding real people."

The Thesis Statement

What a thesis actually does

A thesis statement tells your reader the exact point your essay is going to make. It's not just a topic ("this essay is about school uniforms") — it's a claim someone could disagree with.

Weak vs. strong

Weak: "School uniforms are a big topic." Strong: "Schools should require uniforms because they help students focus on learning instead of on clothes." The strong one picks a side and gives a reason.

Keep it specific

A thesis that could fit almost any essay on the topic is too vague to be useful. The more specific your claim, the easier the rest of the essay is to write.
